Three Recommended Dog On Lead Walks - Haslemere

Three Recommended Dog On Lead Walks - Haslemere

We understand that sometimes an off-lead walk is not an option so we have curated a shortlist of our recommended dog-on-lead trails in and around Haslemere.

Hester and I volunteer at Helping Hounds Hampshire where the rescue dogs are not able to go fully off lead unless they are in a secure, enclosed and private space. In order for them to still get a good stomp on one of their multiple walks a day, we have explored and shortlisted our three recommended dog-on-lead walks in and around Haslemere.

MARLEY COMMON

With a map right next to the National Trust car park, there is very little planning required to enjoy this area. There are several signposted routes to choose from of varying lengths but most will be around 30 minutes to an hour. There is some wildlife and livestock to be aware of but as your dog is already on lead this shouldn't be a problem if you are sensible. The terrain is hilly in places with your typical sandy woodland underfoot. No stiles require navigating. There are poo bins by the car park but you will need to bring your own water.

BLACK DOWN

Black Down is a beautiful area with some stunning views (if not too foggy). There are several options for parking along Tennyson's Lane which are all free National Trust car parks. The land is predominantly open with level terrain however can be boggy in places, especially during the winter months, so sensible footwear and clothing is recommended (plenty of towels for after too). There a loads of route options but we recommend the 'Temple of the Winds' trail. Its an easy circular route which culminates at one of the best views of the South Downs National Park. It takes approximately an hour and thirty minutes to complete this 2 mile long loop. There are poo bins by the car park but you will need to bring your own water. This area is very popular for dog walkers so keep that in mind if your dog is not very sociable.

HASLEMERE STATION - DEVILS PUNCHBOWL LOOP

This route is ideal if you want to travel in to Haslemere for the day on the train. The route starts at Haslemere station and takes you up and around the picturesque Devils Punchbowl. This is a longer walk at almost 15km it is worth allowing plenty of time to enjoy it, 4-5 hours would be recommended, longer if you want to stop for coffee at the lovely National Trust coffee shop at the bowl. There are several steep ascents and descents as well as a variety of kissing gates and single gates to navigate so keep that in mind when considering if your dog (or you) are up for it. A good pair of hiking boots are a must - this is not a casual stroll in your gym shoes. Plenty of bins and water stops along the way so you wont ever have to carry our poo bags far.

If you would prefer to shorten the walk you can always head to the punchbowl car park and just do the loop around instead.
